  • Is Totley Library part of the Sheffield Library system?
    • Yes! We are an “associate” library of Sheffield City Libraries. This means, for example, that you can reserve books at Totley that are held by other Sheffield libraries and we can get them for you.
  • What are “Orange Sticker” books?
    • Our Orange Sticker books are part of our book loan stock. They are made up of donated books and those we purchase with our own funds. They are “private” to Totley Library and are not part of the council’s book stock. They are identified by a round orange sticker and must be checked out and in at the front desk; you cannot use the automatic machines.
  • Can I reserve books?
    • Yes, you can reserve books from our Orange Sticker Scheme and the council’s book stock, including books from any other library in the Sheffield library system.
  • Are there any fines for late books?
    • All books are loaned for a period of 3 weeks. They can be renewed up to three times. There are no fines for late returns on either council books or our own Orange Sticker books. However, if books have not been renewed or returned within 12 weeks, they will be marked as lost and you will be liable for the replacement cost. Please return your books as soon as you have finished reading them to allow other users to enjoy them. Your account, and ability to borrow our Orange Sticker books will be blocked if you owe more than £10. For council books you will be blocked if you owe more than £20.
  • Do you have any paid staff?
    • No, the library is run entirely by volunteers.
  • How do I become a library member?
    • Just come in to the library with at least one form of address ID. You’ll be asked to fill in a simple form with your details and you’ll be issued with a library card. You can start borrowing books straight away. Library membership is free.
  • Is there a minimum age for joining the library?
    • No, you can have a library card from the day you are born! However if you’re under 16 you’ll need a signature from a parent or guardian.
  • How is the library financed?
    • The library is funded through a combination of a grant from the council, smaller grants and awards, and our own fundraising. We need over £24,000 per year to keep the library open.
  • How can I get involved?
    • If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer, just call in at the library and talk to us. You’ll be asked to complete a volunteer application form. You can find out more about volunteering and apply online, on our volunteering page.
